The Punjab Ashirwad scheme was renamed from Shagun on 26 January 2004. Since then, the scheme is running as Ashirwad. In this scheme, the government is going to provide financial assistance to the parents/ guardians of the girl child who belongs to a scheduled caste, Christian girl, backward class/ caste, economic vehicle section, daughter of a widow, and scheduled caste widow/divorcee women for marriage. From January 1, the Punjab Government will use a portal to carry out the Ashirwad initiative in a more open manner. Applications for this program will only be accepted online, and recipients can apply at http://ashirwad.punjab.gov.in to take advantage of the program. While announcing the opening of the portal, Social Justice, Empowerment, and Minorities Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that a sum of 184.04 crores has been given to 1,95,139 students under the Post Matric Scholarship for SC Students Scheme. Under this program, the Dr. Ambedkar Scholarship application portal was launched on June 8, 2022, for students to apply during the academic year 2022–2023; as of December 22, 2022, 2,42,463 students had done so. The government will cover these students’ whole tuition and stipend costs.

Launch of Punjab Ashirwad Scheme

Initially, the scheme was started as the Shagun scheme in the year 1997 where the parents of girls belonging to scheduled caste and widow/divorcee of Punjab domicile will get an amount of rupees 5100 on the occasion of their marriage subject to the condition the annual income of guardian or parents from all sources should not exceed Rs 16000. Later on, in the month of September 1997, the scheme was extended to Christian girls as well. Thereafter in the year 2004 with effect 26 January, the scheme was renamed Ashirwad. At the time of rename, the amount of financial assistance was also increased to 6100 for the scheduled caste, Christian girls, and daughters of widows of any caste at the time of their marriage.

Later from 1st April 2006, the rate of financial assistance was increased to rupees 15000. In the year 2011 from the first of April, the annual income range of the guardian/ parent of the girl child increased from rupees 16000 to rupees 30000. Moreover, the benefits are extended to the widows/divorces at the time of their remarriage.

The motive of the department of social justice empowerment and minorities government of Punjab behind launching the Ashirwad scheme is to provide financial help to the parents of a girl child who belongs to a scheduled caste, Christian girl, backward class/ caste, economic vehicle section, daughter of a widow and schedule caste widow/divorcee women for marriage. This scheme has been started to help the parents with the marriage of their beloved daughter.

Punjab Ashirwad Scheme Benefits/ Features

  • The Aashirwad scheme was introduced by the government of Punjab and managed by the department of social justice empowerment and minorities.
  • This scheme is beneficial for the parents/guardians of the girl child.
  • Under this scheme, the government is going to provide Rs 21000 financial aid at the time of marriage of the girl w.e.f. August 2017.
  • The benefits will be given to girls who belong to scheduled castes, Christian girls, backward class/ caste, economic vehicle section, daughters of a widow, and scheduled caste widow/divorcee women for marriage

  • An announcement has been made by Minister Baljeet Kaur on Wednesday 30th November 2022, Rs 129.29 crore is going to distribute to over 25000 beneficiaries under Ashirwad Scheme in the current financial year.
  • Moreover, a total of rupees 161.31 crores has been earmarked under the scheme in the current financial year according to which rupees 51000 is going to offer to women from scheduled caste scheduled tribes, and other backward classes for their marriage.

Eligibility Criteria of Punjab Ashirwad Scheme

All those who fulfill the below-mentioned criteria will be able to get the benefits under this scheme:


  • Applicant should be a girl from a scheduled caste, Christian girl, backward class/ caste, economical vehicle section, daughter of a widow, and scheduled caste widow/divorcee woman.
  • The annual income of the applicant’s family should be not exceeded Rs.32,790/- w.e.f. 13-2-2014 from all sources.
  • The age of applicant must be 18 years or above at the time of marriage.
  • Applicant should be a bonafide citizen of India who is settled in Punjab.
  • The benefits will be given only upto two girls from the concerned family.
  • Applicant must hold BPL Card.
