On Friday, the chief minister of the state, M K Stalin, opened a program for the empowerment of sanitation employees throughout the state in Madurai. After Odisha, Tamil Nadu is the second state in the nation to adopt such a program and a smartphone app for sanitation employees. At the Madurai Corporation headquarters, the CM also revealed a logo for sanitation workers and introduced a mobile application named SHWAS (Sanitation Workers Health Welfare and Safety). According to the head of UMC, the program and mobile application will assist the workers in enrolling, being properly counted, and leading respectable lives. Sanitary employees will be found, and training, loans for their children’s education, loans to start alternative businesses, and insurance would be offered. Five local bodies, Zone 6 of the Chennai Corporation, Zone 3 of the Madurai Corporation, Pollachi Municipality, Pudukkottai Municipality, and Cheranmahadevi Town Panchayat—have adopted the program as a trial.

The mayor V Indirani Ponvasanth, the minister of commercial taxes P Moorthy, the minister of municipal administration K N Nehru, the minister of rural development Periya Karuppan, the finance minister P T R Palanivel Thiagarajan, and the corporation commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon were all present. Stalin later unveiled a 13-foot-tall bronze statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar at Perungudi, close to the airport in Madurai. There was also Thol Thirumavalavan, the leader of the VCK.

Scheme Objective

The majority of sanitation workers are unseen since they are employed on a contract basis, according to Manvita Baradi, director of the Urban Management Centre (UMC). For the plans to reach these workers without leakage, all of these workers must be centralized under a single forum.

Some of the key benefits of the scheme are as follows:

  • The state government would be able to identify the worker’s thanks to SHWAS’ assistance in assisting them to register themselves.
  • Around 53,301 sanitation workers across the state 18,859 permanent employees and 34,442 temporary employees will benefit from the program.
  • Stalin provided five sanitation employees as part of it with safety supplies.
  • With the assistance of urban local governments and the nonprofit Urban Management Centre, the program will put a special emphasis on the overall development of sanitation employees and their families.
